Fingerprint Gingerbread Man Ornament
Start by mixing up a batch of cinnamon salt dough. Follow our basic salt dough recipe, but instead of adding 2 cups of flour add one and a half cups of flour and half a cup of cinnamon. You could use normal salt dough for this craft, but trust me cinnamon salt dough smells amazing!
Roll out your salt dough until it is about 1cm thick and use a cookie cutter to make gingerbread man shapes in the salt dough.

Dip a finger into acrylic paint and then press it into the salt dough to create fingerprint buttons on your gingerbread man. You could use any colour paint, but we chose to use gold.
Make a small hole at the top of the gingerbread man using a skewer or straw (this is for threading ribbon through later).
Put the salt dough gingerbread men into the oven at a low temperature for a couple of hours (150 degrees will avoid any burning). Turning the salt dough after an hour can speed up the drying out process.
Once fully dry add a face and icing details to your gingerbread man using an acrylic paint marker. We sealed our salt dough ornaments with Mod Podge so that they would be protected and last for years, but this does mean you loose the amazing cinnamon smell. We added the sealer before drawing on the details. Finally thread a ribbon for hanging.
Here is a video of this craft in action. Both Harry (aged 6) and Daisy (aged 3) enjoyed making this cute keepsake ornaments.
How many gingerbread men can you make with one batch of salt dough?
ReplyDeleteYou should be able to make quite a few (depending on the size of cup you use as a measure and the size of the cutter) maybe about 5. Have fun x
