Bat Silhouette Craft
STEP 1: Prepare printable bat template
We had a lot of fun with this spooky bat craft! To prepare for this activity you will need to print out the printable bat template available at the bottom of the page.
Draw around the bat template onto contact paper (sticky back plastic). Then cut the bat shapes out. Older children may enjoy drawing their own bat shapes free hand whilst younger toddlers and preschoolers may need their bat shapes cut out for them.
Once you have cut out your bat shapes carefully peel the back off your contact paper and stick the bat shapes onto a piece of black card. The area covered by the contact paper bat shapes is what will create your bat silhouette.
STEP 2: Draw bat shapes on contact paper
STEP 3: Stick the bat shapes onto black card
STEP 4: Spray paint to make bat silhouttes
This is the best part of this bat craft! Spray silver paint all over the card making sure that you pay particular attention to the area around the bat shapes as this is the area you are trying to create a bat silhouette. .
To make the silver spray paint simply mix metallic silver paint with water and add it to a small spray bottle. You don't want the paint to be too thick or it will block up the spray bottle. You are aiming for a consistency of about 50 % paint and 50% water.
TIPS: It's important to try and keep the spray bottle as upright as possible or fill it with lots of paint in order for it to work well. As the paint started running out Daisy (aged 3) found it harder to use the spray bottle.
STEP 5: Remove the bat shapes to reveal a bat silhouette
Leave the paint to dry and then carefully peel off the contact paper bat shapes. You will be left with a bat silhouette against a star filled night sky.
STEP 6: Add eyes to bat craft
This bat craft would make a perfect Halloween craft for preschoolers, especially with the colourful googly eyes!
