We love crafts that involve little fingerprints, footprints and handprints so this fingerprint bug craft is high up on our list of the best bug activities! You can see lots more handprint, footprint and fingerprint ideas in our DIY keepsake collection.
We have been doing lots of bug crafts and activities lately but this has to be one of my favourite. I love how creative you can be with which bugs you choose and how you draw their features. There is also the added bonus of it being a really easy activity to set up, simply print out the bug jar and get going! You can use paint to create the fingerprints if you have time to wait for it to dry or alternitively you can use ink pads.
Before you start making your fingerprint bugs it would be a fun idea to go on a bug hunt to help you decide which bugs you want to add to your bug jar. We have a bug hunt tick sheet which you might find useful.
Once you have finished this bug craft have a go at playing our bug action game to get everyone moving again! If you want to find out more about bugs take a look at some of the books on our bug book list.

Fingerprint Bug Jar Craft
The first step of this activity is to add fingerprints to your fingerprint bug jar. You can do this using paint or ink pads. I personally prefer the look of using colourful paints, but ink pads may be more practical as you don't have to wait for them to dry.
Once the fingerprints are completely dry turn them into bugs by drawing on legs, wings, eyes, spots and stripes. You could try to make your fingerprint bugs look like real bugs or you could make up your own imaginary bugs!
What are you going to add to your fingerprint bug jar?
This craft is great for kids of all ages. Younger toddlers can add their painty fingerprints to the jar and tell an adult what they would like their fingerprints to be turned into while preschoolers and older children can have a go at designing their own bugs.
