It is important for children to recognise how amazing our planet is but also how fragile it is and this earth craft is a great place to start. The handprints (or cut out hand shapes) in this earth day activity perfectly represent the idea that the earth is in our hands. It is down to us to look after our planet and children need to know that they can make a difference.
Whilst doing this earth day craft children can be thinking about our beautiful planet. Here are a few earth day questions for them to think about.
Earth Day Questions for Kids
What do you love about our earth?
Where is your favourite place on earth?
Why is it important to care about our earth?
What can you do to help our earth?
How can you make a difference?
Whilst thinking about our beautiful planet it would be fun to get outside and do some nature inspired activities like painting with nature paintbrushes or making a flower suncatcher.
I have fallen in love with the earth day craft that we are sharing today as firstly I love the effect of black glue and watercolour and secondly I love the idea of including children's handprints to make it more personal.
This craft is great for kids of all ages but toddlers and younger preschoolers would need to have some help with the black glue outline. If using black glue makes this craft a little more time consuming than you wanted you could of course just colour or paint the earth template.

How to make black glue
Black glue crafts look really effective as the black glue outline creates a clear bold line and acts as a barrier to stop the paint spreading. Making black glue is easy, just follow the instructions below.
If for any reason the glue is not shaking together, squeeze the glue into a cup, mix the paint and glue together and then use a funnel to pour the black glue back into the bottle.
- Open the top of a half empty bottle of glue.
- Squirt a good amount of black paint into the bottle. The glue will look a dark cloudy grey.
- Put the lid back on the glue and shake it well.

Earth Day Black Glue Craft
Download and print out the earth template available at the bottom of the page. There are no hand templates included as I think it is much nicer for a child to draw around their own hands.
Trace the outline of the earth with black glue. Allow the glue to dry completely. You could put it in the sun for about an hour or you can let it dry overnight. (If you don't have time for this step consider just painting or colouring in the earth template).
Cut out the earth and then paint it using blue and green watercolors. The black glue will act as a barrier to keep the colours from bleeding into each other.
Allow the paint to dry completely. Cut out a small red heart from cardstock. Trace around your hands on cardstock and cut them out.
Glue the earth onto the hands and finally complete this stunning planet earth activity by gluing the heart onto the earth.
Your Earth Day craft is finished! You have the whole world in your hands!
