STEP 1: Gather your supplies
Before you get started, make sure to gather all your supplies! This owl craft goes PERFECTLY with one of our favourite books, Owl Babies! Reading the story book first makes a great addition to this owl activity.
STEP 2: Prepare the owl pattern
Print, download, and cut out the free printable owl pattern that can be found by scrolling down below. Once you have it cut out, trace it on the coloured cardstock and cut it out as shown below. Be sure to trace and cut out the beak twice.
If you are making this owl puppet with toddlers or younger preschoolers you may like to pre-cut these shapes ready for your child to stick them onto their paper bag.

STEP 3: Prepare the paper bag
Next you need to decide which colour you would like your owl to be and cover the paper bag in cardstock in your chosen colour. Cut out large squares of coloured cardstock and glue them on top of the bag on the side where the bottom of the bag flaps up and cut off any excess from the sides.
STEP 4: Glue on the wings and ears
Once you have prepared the paper bag with cardstock of your choice, it's time to glue the wings and ears on! Glue the smaller wings on top of the bigger sized wings and then glue them on the bag under the flap as shown below.
Then, glue the ears on top of the bag.
STEP 5: Glue the beak and feet
Now it's time to glue on the beak and feet pieces! Glue the beak pieces together at the wider end in order to create a wide mouth effect. Once you've done that, glue the beak and feet pieces onto the bag as shown below.
STEP 6: Finalize the owl craft
We're almost done with your owl craft! Now we're going to finalize the owl puppet by cutting out and gluing the eyes above the beak and then using a black marker to add feather detail to the wings and stomach as shown below.
Your owl craft is now finished! Toddlers and preschoolers (as well as older children) will love this owl craft for kids. Have fun making this owl puppet in lots of different colours. Why not make a whole family of owls!?
Animal puppets are so much to make and kids will love acting out their favouirte animal themed books and putting on puppet shows for you to watch!
