This is the PERFECT autumn scarecrow craft for preschoolers - it is great for their fine motor skills! It is a little harder than some of our other preschooler crafts and it takes a little patience, so I would advise doing this as a one to one activity rather than trying to do it with a group of children. Don't forget to check out our other Autumn activities too!

Preschoolers will have so much fun putting this paper plate craft together and it would be so much fun to make after singing the nursery rhyme 'A Dingle Dangle Scarecrow'. (I have added a video of the nursery rhyme below if you are unfamilar with it.) Scroll down below to make your own scarecrow craft for kids!
Supplies for your scarecrow craft:
- Craft paper - pink, orange/brown, green, and yellow
- Crayons - yellow and brown
- Paper plates
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- School glue
- Glue stick
- Large googly eyes
- Dark brown yarn
Directions to make your paper plate scarecrow craft:
STEP ONE: Gather your supplies
Before you get started with this fun scarecrow craft, be sure to gather up all your supplies! For younger preschoolers you may want to have a few of the shapes pre-cut so that your preschooler can get straight on with the making. Older children may enjoy drawing and cutting out the pieces for their scarecrow themselves.
STEP TWO: Create the scarecrow face
Now to get started, colour the paper plate with a yellow crayon (or paint it if you prefer). Once you've done that, draw a hat and triangle nose on your orange craft paper and then cut them out.
Glue them onto the paper plate and glue on two googly eyes as well. Then, cut and glue several small pieces of yarn under the hat to resemble hair.
STEP THREE: Cut the sunflower
This step is optional but the sunflower does look great! Create a sunflower to add to the hat by cutting out a square on your yellow craft paper and fold it in half twice. Draw a scallop pattern as shown below, cut it out, and unfold.
STEP FOUR: Prepare and glue the sunflower
Now that you have your flower cut out, use your hole punch to cut out holes along the edges and weave your yarn through them as shown below. Tie the loose ends to the back and glue it onto the hat. Draw and cut out two leaves from the green craft paper and glue them behind the flower.
Younger preschoolers may need a bit of guidance with threading their yarn, but it is brilliant for working on fine motor skills.

STEP FIVE: Cut and thread the scarecrow smile
Once you've glued on the sunflower, cut out a half circle from the bottom portion of the paper plate as shown below. Use the brown crayon to mark symmetrical dots along the top and bottom mouth pieces and punch a hole using the hole punch along each marking.
Weave your yarn through the holes to create the scarecrow's smile and then tie the loose ends on the backside of the paper plate.
STEP SIX: Finalize the scarecrow's face
To finish off the scarecrow's face, cut out two circles from the pink craft paper and glue them to the sides of the plate to resemble cheeks - making sure only to apply glue to the top portion of the plate.
That's it! Your paper plate craft is finished! For more added fun why not glue a craft stick to the back of your scarecrow face to turn it into a mask!
We hope you enjoy this super fun scarecrow craft for kids! Your preschoolers will have so much fun with this scarecrow craft, even if it is a little harder than some of our other preschool crafts! Be sure to try our other paper plate craft activities.
