To begin, cream the butter and sugar on medium speed in an electric mixer. Then, add an egg and vanilla extract; continue mixing.
In a large bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, and salt together. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients... I add 1/3 at a time. Mix completely until combined - making sure to stop every few minutes to scrape the sides of your bowl.
Form the cookie dough into a large ball and wrap it with plastic wrap to chill in the fridge for 1 hour.
Next, preheat your oven to 350F or 175C and place a piece of parchment paper on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle your work area and rolling pin with flour and then roll out the cookie dough until it's about 1/4-inch thick.
Cut out 12 heart shapes with your cookie cutter and bake in the oven for 7-10 minutes, until the edges start to brown. Be sure to allow them to cool completely before decorating!

- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Pinch of salt

- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- 24 googly candy eyes
- 24 pretzels
- 12 red M&Ms
- Heart shaped cookie cutter
Directions to make your reindeer cookies
STEP 1: Gather your supplies
Before you get started, make sure to gather up all your supplies. If you're like me and don't have the patience to let an egg get to room temperature, here's a quick tip for you: set it in a bowl of warm (not hot) water for about 5 minutes. Once it's warm on the outside, it's reached room temp! I do this a lot as I'm a very spontaneous baker!
STEP 2: Prepare the cookie dough
Now it's time to prepare the cookie dough! It's important to note that the cookie dough recipe will make double what is needed for the reindeer cookies. You can either make half the amount of dough... or double the decorations. Which ever suits you best.
STEP 3: Bake the cookie dough
Cut out 12 heart shapes with your cookie cutter and bake in the oven for 7-10 minutes, until the edges start to brown. Be sure to allow them to cool completely before decorating!
STEP 4: Decorate your reindeer cookies
Now that the cookies are baked and cooled, it's time to start decorating! To make the icing, beat together the butter, sugar, cocoa powder, and milk with an electric mixer, turned up to medium speed and gradually increase to high speed.
Once the ingredients are combined, frost each of your 12 cookies with an offset spatula.
Next, place 2 pretzels at the top of each cookie to form the reindeer's antlers. Give him eyes with 2 googly candy eyes and a nose with a red M&M.
Toddler and preschoolers will love the decorating stage of making these yummy reindeer cookies and older children may enjoy baking them from scratch.
We hope you enjoy making these fun reindeer cookies with the kids! They are so much fun to make to get into the spirit of christmas and these reindeer cookies would make perfect Christmas cookies for Santa! This easy sugar cookie recipe makes it easy to make a batch of reindeer cookies of your own - we know you will love these reindeer cookies as much as we do!
