Building this leprechaun trap is only part of the equation. You can use this leprechaun garden to entice little leprechaun with the rainbow and pot of gold. After that... you can knock down the ladder or even have a box nearby to trap him in!

Supplies needed to make a leprechaun trap


  • Coloured craft papers
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Craft sticks
  • Acrylic paint
  • Gold craft glitter
  • Sequins
  • Needle and thread
  • Beads
  • Twigs
  • Recyclable tin can

Directions for how to build a leprechaun trap


STEP 1: Gather your supplies


Before you get started, gather up all your supplies. There are quite a few supplies needed for this leprechaun garden so it will definietly make things easier. Make sure you get your printable rainbow and pot of gold templates which can be found at the bottom of the page.

STEP 2: Prepare the tin can


Now to get started, grab your empty tin can. This can simply be from some canned goods with the label ripped off and washed. You can also substitute with a small pot if needed.

Cut a piece of green craft paper and glue it around the outside of the can. Make sure it covers the whole can and trim off any excess.

Once you've done that, fill the can with some small pebbles or stones.

STEP 3: Prepare the template


Next, trace the template patterns on the desired coloured craft papers and cut them out with your scissors. The template includes the rainbow base, 6 arch shapes for each colour of the rainbow, a cloud, a pot of gold base, and the pot for the pot of gold.

Once you've cut everything out, start gluing things on! Glue the 6 arch shapes on the rainbow base and then glue the pot of gold onto the round base. You will notice a small part of the pot of gold base visible at the top.

Next, apply the golden craft glitter on the gold pot base that is visible at the top. Glue the cloud on one of the ends of the rainbow. Then, glue the rainbow and the pot of gold on craft sticks.

STEP 4: Prepare ladder


Prepare craft sticks for the ladder - you will need 2 full sized sticks and another stick cut into 5-6 small pieces. Then, paint each piece with green acrylic paint. Allow time to dry.

Once the paint has dried, place the 2 full sized sticks on a flat surface so they are parallel to each other with enough space to glue the small pieces. Glue on the other pieces to complete the ladder and set aside.

STEP 5: Prepare remaining pieces


We're almost done with the leprechaun trap! Now, prepare a needle and thread and then thread the beads onto it. Be sure to leave some thread on each end. Your string of beads will need to be tied to two small twigs. 

As an alternative, you can cut out triangles from craft paper and stick them on a piece of thread to make a bunting.

STEP 5: Finalize leprechaun trap


You now have all the pieces needed for making a leprechaun trap.

Finish up by decorating the tin can with all the items. You can even add more if there's anything you think you need to add to make this the perfect leprechaun garden or leprechaun trap! You could even sprinkle some lucky charms!
