One of the things I really love about this threading craft is all the benefits it has for toddlers and preschoolers. It is great for working on fine motor skills as children need to pick up the small pieces of ceral and then thread the cereal on the string. It's great for hand eye co-ordination too.
Another skill it's great for is grouping and sorting. This rainbow craft really gets little brains working as they are sorting different colours and grouping them together as they are threaded.
This rainbow craft for toddlers and preschoolers makes a really fun activity for playdates, the classroom, or even just for having fun at home. The choice is yours!
Rainbow Craft for Toddlers and Preschoolers - Threading Craft
Supplies for your rainbow craft
- Fruit cereal - purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red
- 2 jumbo marshmallows
- Yarn or string
- Plastic yarn needle (if you dont have a yarn needle try wrapping tape around the end of your yarn or string to make it easier to thread the cereal)
Directions to make your rainbow craft
STEP 1: Gather your supplies
Before you get started, gather up all the supplies you need. Make sure you have spare fruit cereal as you just know some of these edible supplies are going to be eaten whilst doing this threading craft!
STEP 2: Prepare the rainbow craft
To get started making your rainbow necklace, cut some yarn or string long enough to fit around your toddler or preschooler's neck. I like to play on the side of caution and measure it to be a little longer than needed. You can always cut off the excess later!
Next, sort the fruit cereal by colour - this is a GREAT part for toddlers and preschoolers to get involved in. You could even count out how many you have of each colour.
Then, run one end of the yarn or string through the plastic needle and thread a marshmallow a little more than half way. This makes the cloud at one end of the rainbow and stops the fruit cereal from falling off.
STEP 3: Thread the cereal
Once you've done that, help your toddler or preschooler start threading the cereal. Have them count out the purple pieces and thread them onto the string as shown below.
Repeat with all the remaining colours in the order of blue, green, yellow, orange, and red.
STEP 4: Finish off the rainbow craft
To finish this fun threading craft, thread another marshmallow on the end of the cereal. Tie a knot at the end to secure the necklace and cut off any excess string - making sure to leave just a little so it doesn't fall apart.
Now you rainbow necklace is ready to be worn by your toddler or preschooler (if they haven't already started munching on it!)
We hope you have fun with this rainbow craft for toddlers and preschoolers!! It is the PERFECT threading craft - especially for children working on fine motor skills. Be sure to check out these other rainbow activities for kids too!
