How to make a salt dough ornament
STEP 1: Gather your supplies
Before you get started on making this fun salt dough ornament, gather up all the supplies listed above. You'll also need to preheat the oven to 100C.
STEP 2: Mix the dough
To begin, combine the flour and salt in a medium bowl and mix to combine. Add 1/2 cup of water and mix well.
Add the remaining water in very small increments - until you reach the consistency of playdough. If needed, add more flour.

STEP 3: Cut and decorate
Roll the salt dough out until it is abut 1cm thick and cut out the ornaments using a Christmas tree cookie cutter. Alternatively, you can have your toddler pick out their favourite holiday-themed cookie cutter for even more fun!
Punch a hole in the top of the ornament using the end of a straw or a skewer.
Help your toddler or preschooler choose their favourite marker colours and decorate as desired. We chose to use different colours for ornaments on the tree, but feel free to experiment with different designs!

STEP 4: Prep and bake the ornaments
Trim the edges of your salt dough decoration with a butter knife or playdough tool if needed and then place it into a baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes, turn the tree decoration over and bake for a further 30 minutes. Depending on the thickness of your salt dough ornament it may need a little longer in the oven to dry out.
TIP: Keep the oven at a low temperature (100C) to dry out the salt dough and avoid any bubbling or burning.

STEP 4: Display the ornaments
Allow your salt dough shapes to cool completely before removing them from your baking dish. Thread some twine through the hole and have your child help you find the perfect spot to display their salt dough decoration on the Christmas tree.
We hope you and your toddler or preschooler have an afternoon of fun making these salt dough decorations! Salt dough ornaments are so much fun to make this time of year - especially when it involves colouring. Have fun!
