Mardi Gras is french for 'Fat Tuesday' and is a festival held the day before Ash Wednesday (also known as Shrove Tuesday). As the name suggests Mardi Gras (or fat Tuesday) involves eating rich, fatty food and it represents the start of the Christian lent season that leads up to Easter.Celebrating Mardi Gras involves eating, music, parades, masks and lots of fun! Wearing masks such as the one in this craft tutorial adds to the carnival excitement. The Mardi Gras colours are purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power.

How to make a Masquerade Mardi Gras Mask
STEP 1: Prepare mask supplies
Before beginning this craft get all your supplies ready. This includes printing the mask template out onto thick paper or thin card stock.
STEP 2: Cut out mask
Cut out around outer edge of the mask template and cut out eye holes. If you are doing this craft with toddlers or younger preschoolers having the masks cut out in advance would work well.
STEP 3: Decorate mask
Now for the fun part! Kids will love using their imaginations to decorate their own carnival masks. We glued sequins to the front of the mask and once the glue had dried we stuck feathers to the back of the mask.
There really is no right or wrong way to make these masks though. Let your little one get creative! If you want to make a Mardi Gras mask you may choose to only provide sequin, feathers etc in the Mardi Gras colours of purple, green and gold. Alternatively you might decide to go into full on carnival mode and provide things in a variety of bright colours for your child to use.
STEP 4: Make Handle
Once your child has made their mask and it has been left to fully dry attach a paper straw to the back of the masquerade mask as a handle.
Now you have made your Mardi Gras mask it's time to have your own carnival celebration!
