In our house, we love having fun baking but we are not professional chefs by any stretch of the imagination! That's why we love creating cake using basic cake recipes or boxes of cake mix. No special baking skills are needed, this Unicorn cake is perfect for any parent out there who love making their kids happy but they want something not too complicated to make!
This unicorn birthday cake is made using a box of white cake mix but feel free to use your favourite white cake recipe instead.

Unicorn Birthday Cake
Unicorn Cake Ingredients
- Unicorn Horns, Ears and Eyes kit
- 2 boxes of white cake mix (plus the ingredients asked for on the back of the box: 8 large Eggs, 2 ½ cups of water, 1 cup of canola oil)
- Red and pink gel colouring
For the unicorn cake frosting you will need:
- 3 cups unsalted butter, softened
- 6 cups powdered sugar
- 5 tbsp heavy whipping cream
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- Red and Pink gel food colouring
Unicorn Cake supplies
- 9 inch round cake pans x 3
- 10inch round cake board
- Large piping bag with a star tip
- Medium mixing bowls
How to Make the Unicorn Birthday Cake
- Preheat your oven to 350 F and spray the cake pan with pan baking spray.
- Using a hand mixer or a large spoon, beat all the cake ingredients in a large bowl until everything is mixed and smooth. (follow the instructions on your cake mix box or use your favourite white cake recipe),
- Divide the cake mixture into two bowls and add a few drops of pink food colouring into one bowl and a few drops of red food colouring into the other.
- Add the cake mix to the 3 cake pans. Alternate the different coloured cake mixtures into each cake pan to create the tie-dye effect.
- Now, place the cake pans into the oven and bake for 28-32 minutes. You will know the cake is baked when a toothpick comes out clean.
How to make the unicorn cake frosting
- Using a standing mixer, beat the unsalted butter, powdered sugar, whipping cream and vanilla extract together. Ensure all the ingredients are combined and smooth but stiff with peaks.
- Scoop 1 cup of frosting into each of the two medium bowls.
- Mix in a few drops of pink gel food colouring into one of the bowls.
- Mix in a few drops of red gel food colouring into the second bowls.
How to Build your Unicorn Layered Cake
Place one cake layer onto the cake board and cut the dome off the cake to make an even layer. Repeat this step with the other two layers.
Scoop 1 cup of white frosting into 1 side of the large piping bag. Scoop the red and pink frosting into the piping bag along different sides and set aside.
Scoop 1 cup of white frosting onto the bottom layer and spread evenly.
Place the second cake layer on top and spread evenly 1 more cup of frosting. Place the last layer of cake on top.
Use the remaining white frosting and frost the entire cake.
Using the piping bag, start piping the “Hair” for the unicorn on the top and around one side of the cake to create a “Mane”.
Place the horn, ears, and eyes onto the cake.
Place the unicorn cake into the fridge to harden the frosting before serving it.
Now it's time to enjoy your delightful unicorn birthday cake! We hope you have fun baking and decorating this magical unicorn cake! This would make the PERFECT birthday cake for little (or big) unicorn fans.
