I like to welcome every change of season with different crafts and activities and this summer is no different!
When we were making this summer tree made of playdough and nature materials, I tried to teach my kids a few random and fun facts about rocks, trees, little bugs, and all about the seasonal change. It was so fun and they seemed super curious about it all.
Seasonal-themed activities are such a lovely way to celebrate new beginnings and sneak in a bit of educational play for our little ones!

Summer Tree Nature and Playdough Activity
- Leaves
- Playdough in orange, blue and yellow to be mixed up or brown playdough.
This tree could also be made from air-dry clay and nature.
Playdough Summer Tree Instructions:
STEP 1: Leaf hunting!
Get your kids ready for a little bit of a creative adventure! Take a walk with them around your garden or any open natural space you have nearby. Grab some leaves and invite them to do the same.
STEP 2: Mix your playdough
Once they've collected enough nature material to work with, go to a quiet place and get your playdough ready! Mix orange, blue and yellow playdough to get that muddy greyish colour to make your tree trunk. Alternatively use air dry clay.
STEP 3: Start forming your tree
Tear apart the grey playdough in two parts, one a bit larger than the other. Now, take the larger part and roll it into the shape of your tree trunk!
STEP 4: Make the branches
Once that's done, put it aside and take the smaller part of your grey playdough. Pick a few bits of it and start to shape them to form your branches and then attach them to your tree trunk.
STEP 5: Add the leaves
If you look at the image below, you will see we created two large branches and two-forked ones on each branch, but hey, you can create your tree anyway you like! Once you are happy with your tree trunk and branches it is time to add your leaves.
Invite you little one to fill the branches on their playdough summer tree with the leaves that they collected earlier.
How cute, right? I just love playdough for nature playtime! It's a wonderful sensory duo that truly encourages kids to use and improve their sensory skills and have tons of fun while doing it. We hope you enjoy this summer playdough activity. What a fun excuse to get out and enjoy the outdoors this summer.
