The work and approach of this famous Russian painter is great inspiration for encouraging little ones to get lost in art projects! The best part is that you can use so many different colour combinations, different mediums, and really experiment.
This Kandinsky painting project for kids allows kids to explore shapes and colours through open play due to the abstract style. You can even introduce colour mixing during this project and see what different combinations you can come up with!

Kandinsky circles painting supplies:
- Kandinsky circles template
- Watercolour or craft paper - white
- Watercolour paints - desired bold colours
- Paintbrush
How to make Kandinsky inspired circle art:
STEP 1: Gather your supplies
STEP 2: Prepare template
Print out your template to use for your painting. Typical white computer paper or cardstock works fine, but if you have white watercolour paper that will fit into your printer, that's even better!
STEP 3: Start painting
Now it's time to invite your child to paint! Start by choosing a colour for the outside circle and paint on the line.
Once you've done that, grab another colour and paint another circle inside the first. Keep going until you've completed the inside of the circle, choosing new colours each time. Finish up by painting in the outside square area with a different colour.
STEP 4: Repeat!
Once you've finished, repeat these steps for your remaining circles. Keep going until you have a full painting! Set aside to allow time to dry.
STEP 5: Experiment
This Kandinsky for kids art project can be navigated in so many ways! Experiment with different colours and mediums. Try markers, pastels, crayons, or different type of paints. Have fun and let kids explore shapes and colours in new ways.
If painting 6 circles is too much, how about painting your Kandinsky circles as a group project? Simply paint one circle each and then glue the circles down next to one another on a piece of cardstock. The completed circle painting will be really effective, especially if created with a large group of children.
