What is Pointillism?
So first things first, what is pointillism? Pointillism is a painting technique created by the French artist George Seurat.
Only using the point of their brushes, painters created entire landscapes, abstracts and portraits artworks using tiny dots and even little dashes. They used these tiny marks to make shapes and blend colours instead of mixing colour paint and using brush strokes.
This technique was not popular at first with the traditional artists, but it soon became appreciated for its beauty. It allowed people to have a whole different perception of how colour works.
Looking at the paintings at a distance makes your eyes blend the colours, but as you get closer, you can appreciate all the tiny little dots that create the painting's shapes. It's almost like magic!
Pointillism Leaf Art
Using the pointillism technique we have created a really fun leaf art project that is perfect for any age! Take a look at some of Georges Seurat's artwork before getting started as inspiration. Pointillism Leaf Art - Supplies:
- Art paper
- Watercolors
- Template (grab below!)
- Cotton swab
- Small paintbrush
Pointillism Leaf Art - Instructions:
STEP 1: Download and Print out the leaf template.
Scroll down below and grab our free leaf printable template! Once you have it, print it out onto art paper and let's begin!
STEP 2: Start dotting!
Grab a round paintbrush with a small tip and use watercolors to paint little dots of different colours inside the leaf. Autumn leaf colours of red, orange, yellow, green and brown work well, but get creative and try out other colour combinations too.
Continue until the leave outline is filled with dots!
STEP 3: Add more dots.
Using a cotton swab make bigger dots around the background. We used different shades of blue, but again get creative, other colours would work well too!
STEP 4: Outline your work.
Take black glue, a black marker or black paint and outline the leaf to make the shape really stand out!
This is such an entertaining art project and the results are beautiful. I love how it keeps the kids engaged the whole time!
TOP TIPS: This pointillism leaf craft doesn't have to be made using watercolour paints. Other suggestions are to add dots using markers, or to dip fingers in paint and fill the outline with fingerprint dots.
