Who is Mondrian?
Piet Mondrian was born in The Netherlands, all the way back in 1872. He expressed his vision of art through colours, shapes, and lines. He would use red, yellow, and blue (primary colours) most of the time. Some of his most famous paintings, such as the "Trafalgar Square," featured geometric lines and shapes in primary colours.
The Mondrian ornament we are sharing today has been inspired by his use of line and bright colours. Before starting this craft you may want to show the kids different artworks by Mondrian and tell them a little bit about his art so they can get inspired.

As you can see the ornament template is not only great for this Mondrian ornament craft, it could be used for any ornament craft.
STEP 2: Make your Mondrian design!
Now it is time to create your own designs on the Christmas ornament template. Draw straight lines in various directions. To get that geometric-style, use a ruler. Take a look at some examples of Mondrian art and use the images below as a guide.
STEP 3: Add some colour
Spread out a selection of coloured pencils, markers, and watercolours. Choose your favourite medium and start adding colour to the different sections you have created on your ornament template.
STEP 4: Final touches.
Leave your ornament template to dry if needed and then cut it out. To thicken up your ornament you may want to add a layer of cardboard to the back. If you wish to do this trace the ornament shape onto cardboard and cut it out. Once you have both shape cutouts, glue the template cutout onto the cardboard one.
The final step is to add a piece of yarn or ribbon to make this craft a ready-to-use ornament that you can add to your Christmas tree right away! Make a hole in the ornament to thread your yarn or ribbon through or simply tape your yarn or ribbon to the back of your ornament.
