Who is Rene Magritte?
Rene Magritte was a Belgian artist who became very well known for his surrealist images. He had a successful career in advertising as a graphic designer but it was his unique and thought-provoking paintings that made him a household name.
His images explored the meaning of symbols and prefixed ideas about ordinary objects. The strange placement of common objects and unusual compositions in his paintings became his signature.
In his famous painting 'The Sky Bird' Magritte's genius as both a technical expert and ad-man is on full display. So much so, that this painting later became the emblem of the Belgian airline 'Sabena'.
We took inspiration from this painting and created a kid-friendly art project. Read on to learn how!

Use the bird template to cut out the bird shape in the centre of a piece of light blue card. Keep this cutout aside for later.
STEP 2: Paint the sky.
Taking your blue paint, start painting the sky in the middle of your white art paper using a sponge painting technique. Using various different shades of blue paint simply dab the paint onto your paper in small, gentle pats using a small sponge. Let it dry for a bit.

Take the bird shaped card stock and add glue to the back around the edges. Then place it on top of the blue sky you've just painted. Press to secure in place.
