This colour water play for toddlers is not only fun, it is also the perfect colour mixing activity! Little ones can learn all about colours as well as what happens when they mix them together. This is probably my favourite water activity for toddlers as they enjoy it so much and they're learning so much through play. The best part is they don't even know how much they're learning, they just think they're having fun playing!
What's more, not only are they learning about colours, they are also working on their hand eye coordination and fine motor skills as they use the pipettes to move the coloured water between the containers.
Colour mixing activities like this work well with toddler and preschooler homeschooling, in a nursery or classroom, or even as a playdate activity. It's so EASY to setup and they'll stay occupied for quite a while.

Water Play for Toddlers
Colour Mixing Activity Supplies:
- Plastic containers - various sizes
- Food colour - red, blue, and yellow
- Water
- Pipettes
How to setup a water activity for toddlers:
STEP ONE: Gather your supplies
Before you get started, gather up everything you need for this colour mixing activity. Hunt around the house to find various containers in different sizes and then put them on a tray or inside a small bin (as shown below)
I find it easier to do this activity outside so there is no worry about any spills, but if you don't have an outside area lay down out a waterproof cloth.
STEP TWO: Setup your water activity
Now it is time to get everything ready for your toddler to play! Fill a few small containers with red, blue, and yellow coloured water and a few more with plain water. To do this simply add a few drops of food colouring to selected containers.
Provide some empty containers without water as well as pipettes in various sizes for transferring water between different containers. Using different sized pipettes, they also get to work on fine motor skills!
STEP THREE: Invite your toddler to play!
Now for the fun part! Invite your toddler over to come and investigate the area and explore. You can let them play around and explore independently or you can guide them along by pointing out the different colours they have made or by talking about what colours they can mix together to make certain colours, etc.
This is a great activity for exploring colours, cause/effect, and much more. Let your toddlers and preschoolers play and explore and see what happens!
This colour mixing activity is so much fun for toddlers and preschoolers and it is perfect for the summer season. This water activity for toddlers will likely be an activity to do repeatedly. They will love playing and exploring as they make new discoveries and each time they play they will learn something new.
Water play for toddlers is one of our favourites - especially during this time of year. We hope you enjoy it too!
