Butterfly footprint crafts can be so much fun to make! As with most keepsake projects, it can be a bit tricky to get right so make sure your baby is happy, comfortable, but not overly playful. You don't want a fussy baby or one that is too playful -- both will kick a lot, making it hard to get a nice footprint.
But as long as you time it right and have a calm baby on your hands, it'll be pretty simple to make this clay pot craft! And you can get a gorgeous spring flower to plant inside it too!

Butterfly Footprint Clay Pot Craft - Supplies
- Clay pot - big enough to fit your child's feet
- Acrylic paint - white
- Paint brush
- Rainbow ink pad (or coloured acrylic paint)
How to make a footprint butterfly craft
STEP ONE: Gather your supplies
Before you get started, go ahead and gather up your supplies. You'll want to make sure that your clay pot is large enough to fit the entirety of your child's feet while leaving a little white space around it.
For babies, use a rainbow ink pad for easier results. For older kids, you can use acrylic paint in rainbow colours to paint onto their feet (as we did in this rainbow butterfly footprint craft).
STEP TWO: Prepare your clay pot
To get started, paint your clay pot with white acrylic paint and leave to dry before moving on.
STEP THREE: Add footprints
If this will be done with babies, make sure your baby is very happy and comfortable before you begin! A fussy baby will make this much more difficult. I find it easiest to do this while in a seated position or laying down. Give them something to play with while you prepare their feet!
Press baby's foot firmly onto the ink pad so that each colour is horizontally covering their foot. Then, firmly press their footprints onto the clay pot in the desired positions.
For older kids or if you don't have a coloured ink pad big enough, you can use rainbow coloured acrylic paint instead and then firmly press onto the clay pot.
The ink takes a long time to dry so leave it to dry for 2-3 days before moving on.
STEP FOUR: Add footprint butterfly details
To finish up the baby footprint butterfly, draw on the body and other desired details with a gold acrylic paint pen. That's it! Your butterfly footprint craft is complete! All you need to do now is find a nice flower or plant to put in your clay pot.
We hope you have a lot of fun making this butterfly footprint clay pot craft! Footprint butterfly keepsakes can be so much fun to make. It makes a perfect gift for loved ones or to keep in the window at home.
