This paper plate craft is a penguin craft preschool kids are sure to enjoy making. It also pairs brilliantly with winter or penguin-themed lesson plans or stories. You can learn all about penguins, where they live, etc. Alternatively, you can include it when learning about arctic habitats and animals.

If you have a preschooler who LOVES penguins, this is a great craft for them. While a penguin craft can be educational, it certainly can just be a lot of fun, too!

  • Cotton wool
  • Acrylic paint - white
  • Paintbrush
  • Construction paper - black, yellow, and white
  • Scissors
  • Egg carton
  • Marker - black
  • Glue

How to make a paper plate penguin craft


STEP ONE: Assemble the penguins


Start by cutting out your template pieces for the penguins. The template has the pieces needed to make three penguins. You should have three shapes for the body of your penguins and another three shapes for the penguin's belly and eyes. (scroll down to get the printable)

Once the penguin shapes are cut out, trace the body shapes onto black construction paper. Trace the other shape onto white paper. Glue the white shape on the black body shape as shown below. Use a black marker to color the eyes.

Next, cut out yellow circles for the penguin's feet as shown below. Fold a piece of yellow paper in half and cut a long triangle with a rounded tip. This will be for the beak.

Once you cut your shapes out, glue them in place on your penguins as shown below.

STEP TWO: Assemble the igloos


Cut your egg carton so you only have the rounded portions as shown below and then paint them white. Set aside to dry.

After it dries, use a black marker to draw igloo lines as shown below. Cut out the front for the igloo entrance.

STEP THREE: Assemble the paper plate scene


The last step is to assemble your paper plate penguin craft! Glue your penguins in place so that you have one at the front and two at the back.

Next, glue the cotton around the penguins to create snow as shown below.

The last step is to glue the igloo pieces in place. Your paper plate penguin craft is complete!

Try these other fun ideas for your paper plate penguin craft that's perfect for preschoolers:

  • Make tissue paper penguins by crumpling and gluing various colored tissue paper onto the penguin shapes. You could also use googly eyes in place of drawing the eyes on.
  • Cut out tree shapes from green paper and glue them on white paper to make it look like a snowy tree. Fold the bottom of the trunk so that you can glue it on the paper plate next to the penguins.
  • Rather than paper, make trees by twisting pipe cleaners. This would make great fine motor practice!
  • Give the snow a shimmery look by adding glitter to the cotton.
  • Add scarves or hats to your penguins with construction paper or felt pieces. You can also draw them on with a marker.
  • Give your penguin buttons with sequins or draw on a cute little bowtie.
  • Provide other crafting materials and invite your child to add their own touch. Use the template as a starting point while letting your preschooler get lost in the process of making their penguin craft.
